Urban development is a very hot topic in Rangoon. As we covered this in earlier roundups, many of the older, classical and cultural buildings are being torn down in exchange for new developments. Although it can of course be understood that people will always want progress, it’ll be important to have a plan how to approach this issue.
Last week the panel of ‘Dateline Irrawaddy’ got together to discuss urban planning and specifically the potential threat to the Shwedagon pagoda (the discussion can also be watched here). This followed a well-attended forum organized by the Association of Myanmar Architects on the conservation of Shwedagon.
